How long have you been working in theatre?

I began my theatre career at the Ensemble Theater over 30 years ago. Over the course of my career, I have worked with comedy workshops, Equinox Theater and other community theaters. I got my first shot at directing years later when I started producing plays at my alma mater, Texas Southern University. I am also the founder of the Kingdom Players at Windsor Village United Methodist Church where I worked to develop the art ministry for eight years.

Tell me about your role at Insight?

Insight has been a fully functional corporate interpretation and training company for three years now.  The theatre company is rooted in Christian and community theater but we generally perform in the place of keynote speakers or at luncheons for corporate corporations. All of our original works are created in-house by our writer Bukky Rojugbokan and our performers.

Why was it so important for you to do such a daring new play?

Our current production, Bag Lady, began as a monologue that we set out to do for a women’s day program but it received such great reviews that Bukky and I decided to develop the back story and create a full length play. I wanted to do this play to grow as a company but also because it is such a great message. When you mention “bag ladies” there are so many meanings of the term — from carrying baggage to carrying our actual tote bags and purses. The way we choose what bag to carry as women is all a derivative of the baggage in your mind and heart and goes even deeper with the carrying of our children. All women of all races and ages have a bond of womanhood as wives, mothers, daughters, and fighters of equal rights. Being a woman is a struggle but it’s a wonderful struggle when we can get it together and pull it together.

How can we keep up with the theater’s events?

On Saturday, July 20 at 7:30 p.m. we will be holding a stage reading at the Ensemble Theater to introduce Bag Lady to the community and get audience feedback but we will present the actual full length play in mid October of 2013. We are very serious about taking the play nationally and aiming as high as a run on Broadway and on to the Tony awards.
