When Sugarhill Records recruited three unknowns to record a new single, no one seemed to realize what they were about to do. Written by Grandmaster Caz of the Cold Crush Brothers and released by the Sugarhill Gang, “Rapper’s Delight” became the first hip-hop hit, announcing that the artform was becoming bigger than the Bronx and was now a viable genre of music.
