The fiery flower child was one of the mid-90s most promising singer-songwriters and she had one of the decade’s defining hits with the moody “Criminal.” But after winning Best New Artist, Apple went sour in her acceptance speech, stating: “This world is bulls–t, and you shouldn’t model your life on what we think is cool, and what we’re wearing and what we’re saying.”
