The National Black Arts Festival (NBAF) culminates its successful 25th Anniversary National Black Arts Festival celebration with an extraordinary evening of music, art, culture, and of course…legends, on Friday, September 13, 2013 at 8 p.m. at the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University. Established in 1988, the National Black Arts Festival’s Legends Celebration is an honorary tribute to the lives of artists, historians, critics and politicians who have made important and enduring contributions in their field and who deserve celebration by all of us. It has become NBAF’s signature event.
This year, NBAF honors individuals in music, theater, dance, film, visual arts, and literature as well as looks back at the 25-year legacy of NBAF, while also showcasing its future. The 2013 25th Anniversary Legends Celebration honorees include:
Living Legends of American Dance, Geoffrey Holder and Carmen de Lavallade
Award-winning Theater Director, Woodie King, Jr.
Film Legend and Television Star, Pam Grier
Poet and Scholar, Amiri Baraka
Visual Artist, Writer, and Speaker, Faith Ringgold
Reggae Ambassadors, Third World
The evening will also feature performances and special appearances by Carrie Mae Weems, Charles S. Dutton, Lizz Wright, Les Nubians, Julie Dexter, Dionne Farris, Rhonda Thomas, Ed Spriggs, Ayuko Babu, Jessica Care Moore, Okorie Johnson, Third World’s Stephen “Cat” Coore, Amiri Baraka, Axam Dance Theater Experience and Youth Ensemble Atlanta, Kathleen Bertrand and a host of other music and arts luminaries.
