Tiana Parker’s school changes dress code policy
Tiana, a 7-year-old girl whose natural hairstyle got her sent home from school is now free to wear her coiffure of choice again. As previously reported, Deborah Brown of Community School in Tulsa, Oklahoma dismissed Tiana Parker from attending classes due to her dreadlocked hair. Her father then pulled her out of the institution and a tearful Tiana cried about the experience on camera.
Now according to NewsOn6.com, the charter school has changed the portion of its dress code policy that banned “dreadlocks, afros and other faddish” hairstyles.
The policy now states, “The Administration reserves the right to contact the parents/guardians regarding any personal hygiene issues that it believes causes a risk to the health, safety and welfare of the student, his or her classmates, and faculty or staff or detracts from the educational environment.”
Despite the change in dress code amendment Tiana is continuing her education at a different school.
She has also garnered support from people who read her story and started the “Dear Tiana Parker you are beautiful!” Facebook fan page.
