District of Columbia mayor Adrien Fenty and Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier have confirmed that 13 people have been murdered in cold blood and at least 10 others have been injured — some critically — in a mass murder rampage on a Navy base just a mile from the nation’s Capitol building. The shooting took place shortly before 9 a.m. at a base within a heavy residential area.

The suspect shooter in the Washington, D.C. naval base bloodbath is dead, according to multiple media reports and law enforcement personnel. He is identified by authorities as Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old former Navy personnel from from Fort Worth, Texas. This explains how Alexis was able to gain access onto a military installation and inside buildings that have tight security.

Fenty and Lanier originally stated that there were two other potential suspects on the run in the District area, one white male and a black male. Authorities have now removed the while male from the suspect list and state that he has been accounted for.

Here is the description that police chief Lanier gave reporters about the lone shooting suspect who remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous:

  • Black male
  • Aged 40 to 50 years old
  • Approximately 5-foot-10, 180 pounds
  • He has a medium complexion, with gray sideburns
  • He was wearing an olive-colored Navy-style uniform that is consistent with what other Navy military personnel wear regularly.
  • He was seen with a long gun
