In January 2013, Mark England was left in a state of shock when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, cancer of the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are a vital part of the immune system.
“I just froze up and was left in complete silence. After the initial shock, I had to call someone. So my first choice was my assistant and best friend, Charles. I was a little unsure at first because I knew his mom had passed from lung cancer but I knew that I could get the support from him; he’s strong and that’s what I needed,” he shares.
The native Detroiter is turning his tragedy into triumph and is hosting Fashion Fights Cancer on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at the Detroit Opera House. The red carpet fashion show will raise money for cancer research.
How did you connect with Karmanos Cancer Institute?
My assistant and best friend Charles Collins set everything up, I was set to go in for my chemo treatment the week of the meeting, so he was set to go in by himself but the day before the meeting the hospital called and told me that my white blood count level was off and had to re-schedule so I was able to go with him.
What is the message you want to get out to Detroit about the illness?
Cancer is a fact. Take care of yourself and never take life for granted. I want people to know I am living proof that there is hope and there is a God in all situations, and life will get back to normal. I do not let the thought of recurrence run my life. I live my life and thank God for every day. Let’s keep fighting for the cure.
Who will benefit from this fundraiser?
Other cancer patients and Karmanos Cancer Institute.
What is the inspiration for your collection?
When I was a kid, my mom used to take me to Hudson’s and I knew then that I wanted to be a designer, I knew the meaning of the word “elegant” at an early age.
If you could change anything in the world what would it be?
No cancer for anyone!
