‘Queen of salsa’ Celia Cruz gets a Google doodle

To commemorate what would have been the Latin singers 80th birthday Google has dedicated a doodle to Celia “Queen of Salsa” Cruz.  Cruz was known for her gravity testing hair-do’s, custom outfits that would gag a drag queen and her signature catchphrase “¡Azúcar!” which translates to “sugar” in Spanish.

During the span of her career Cruz had over 20 gold albums and has received recognition for her work from President Bill Clinton with a National Medal of Arts.


Cruz died in 2003 from brain cancer, leaving behind her husband, Pedro Knight. Cruz had no children.
