The wait is over! ABC’s “Scandal” has revealed that “Treme” star Khandi Alexander has booked a recurring role on the third season of the Shonda Rhimes political drama, as Olivia Pope’s late mother Maya Lewis.

Huck, played by Guillermo Díaz and Jake played by Scott Foley did a little digging and discovered that “Operation Remington,” was in reality a cover-up for a civilian airliner that crashed due to “mechanical errors.” Huck believes that Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) shot the plane down on behalf of the U.S. government. On that flight were 300 passengers, one of them, Kerry Washington’s character, Olivia Pope’s mother Maya Lewis. Pope was just was just 12 years-old at the time of her death.

The NAACP Image Award winner will first appear during tonight’s episode in flashbacks surrounding her death.

Alexander’s credits include “CSI: Miami,” “The Corner” and “ER.” Alexander most recently starred as LaDonna Batiste-Williams on HBO’s “Treme,” a drama set in post-Katrina New Orleans, LA where residents of a diverse community struggle to rebuild their lives and their hometown.

Don’t miss an all-new episode of “Scandal” tonight at 10 p.m. on ABC. Let us know what you think of their decision to cast Khandi Alexander to play Olivia Pope’s mother. – ruthie hawkins/@ruubabie
