Peggy Noland’s nude Oprah T-shirts
A designer who classifies her work as white trash meets high-class is making headlines for her line of t-shirts and dresses that include fully nude pictures of Oprah Winfrey in skinny, average and obese form. Peggy Noland’s trashy T-shirts were first brought to the public’s attention via NYMag’s The Cut who interviewed the designer about her “art.”
“For me, it originated as kind of the age-old [red] carpet question: Who are you wearing? And this clearly is: You’re wearing Oprah instead of a designer,” said Noland. “I’m interested and sensitive to this increased access that we have to celebrities and to all of their ups and downs, for better or worse. I feel like it’s kind of my own personal exploration and exploitation of just that.”
The pieces, which were co-created by Sally Thurer, have been blasted for objectifying the body of a black woman.
“This is the most disrespectful thing that I have seen in a long time. Why must white America objectify the body of black women? This is a pattern that has been repeated through[out] history. I hope Oprah sues the pants off of you and Sally Thurer!” added another.
So far, Noland has not responded to the outrage over the clothing. -danielle canada
