A former female prison guard in New York who got pregnant by a two-time cop killer, concocted a plan to have his baby — in order to try to get him off death row now — faces prison time.
Nancy Gonzalez, 30, faces up to 16 months in prison for plotting with inmate Ronell Wilson to produce a child in an effort to save his life, the New York Daily News reports.
Gonzalez and Wilson had sex that produced a child while awaiting resentencing after an appeals court threw out his first death sentence, handed down in 2007, on a legal technicality.
However, in addition to losing her job as a prison guard, the plan did not work. The court system still decided to put Wilson to death.
Wilson, 33, and Gonzalez, who tried to save his life by making him a father — “to show he’s not a monster,” she reasoned — also failed to sway a Brooklyn federal jury. Wilson was sent to death row for a second time in September for gunning down undercover NYPD Detectives Rodney Andrews and James Nemorin.
Gonzalez life is in complete ruins. She has lost her federal job at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. She also lost custody of the baby boy after driving drunk with him in the car, and now faces a penalty of 10 to 16 months in prison.
“Not for a moment do I regret any of what happened,” she told Wilson in a recorded phone conversation last July, according to government court papers.
Gonzelez’s legal rep hopes that a sympathetic court will spare her further humiliation and prison.
Defense lawyer Anthony Ricco has asked Brooklyn Federal Judge Brian Cogan to sentence Gonzalez to probation so she can undergo psychiatric evaluation.
Ricco told the court that Gonzalez was sexually abused as a child and when she served in the military, leading her to engage in destructive sexual relationships “to cope with stress and anxiety.”
