After tuning in to the SAG Awards, a number of Twitter users flipped to NBC to catch the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live” and the debut of its black female cast member Sasheer Zamata. Zamata first appeared on screen during the show’s (very long) intro and flashed across screens last due to alphabetical order. There was a brief moment on Twitter where people wondered why “the black girl was introduced last” but that fire in the making online was quickly extinguished.

Later in the Drake hosted episode, Zamata said her first words onscreen alongside Keenan Thompson in a skit surrounding the rapper’s multicultural Bar Mitzvah. Thompson played Drake’s womanizing uncle who brought his latest aunt (Zamata) to the party (above). Later Zamata sang alongside the rapper in a skit about New Year’s resolutions, portrayed Rihanna and then played Drake’s embarrassed daughter during a slumber party skit.

All in all, Zamata’s debut was simple and not over the top and for some it lacked the big bang they were hoping SNL’s first black female cast member would bring:

Others, however, showered her with praise.
