It was widely reported in January that incarcerated rapper Lil Boosie would be released from Louisiana State Penentientary in mid-February. But music journalist Jeff Weiss posted on Twitter this weekend that Boosie, born Torrence Hatch, won’t be leaving prison as soon as was expected. According to Weiss, Boosie will not be released in February after all.
“Just received confirmation that Boosie will not be getting out of jail next week,” Weiss tweeted. “However, his release is imminent — most likely in March.”
“A parole board hearing was scheduled for Boosie next week but was canceled, because it didn’t make sense considering his release is so soon,” Weiss continued.
“Boosie still has to finish up some classes. His release date will be officially re-calculated — tentatively, he’ll be home in March,” Weiss says.
Weiss has kept in contact with Boosie and remained close to the situation. It was Weiss who interviewed Boosie in summer 2013, when the rapper explained his plans to continue recording following his release. “I have about 500 songs at the moment,” Boosie said at the time. “I’m ready to get in the studio with the best producers. I feel that I’m making the best music I’ve ever made.”
Initially arrested for violating his probation, Boosie was accused of orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot in 2009. While awaiting trial on first degree murder, Boosie pleaded guilty to smuggling drugs into prison and sentenced to eight years, a sentence his attorneys were able to get reduced after some legal wrangling involving the informant in the drug smuggling case. He was subsequently found not guilty of the murder charge.
