Former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam may have inspired millions when he came out as homosexual before the 2014 NFL Draft. But, he also inspired those who oppose gay football players to take their opposition to extreme levels.

According to TheHill.com, Washington lobbyist Jack Burkman issued a statement saying that his firm, J M Burkman & Associates is preparing legislation that would ban gay athletes from playing in the National Football League.

Burkman told TheHill.com that he has already picked up political support for the bill.
Burkman claims Sam’s revelation was what helped him come up with the idea for the legislation. He told TheHill.com that, “If the NFL has no morals and no values, then Congress must find values for it.”

The legislation has little to no chance of ever passing in Congress, or finding a sponsor. Even if it did somehow make it through the House of Representatives, it would be killed in the Senate.

Sam’s decision to come out was hailed by many including First Lady Michelle Obama. If Sam is drafted in the 2014 NFL Draft, he will become the first openly gay player in the history of the National Football League.

”We are losing our decency as a nation,” Burkman said in a statement. “Imagine your son being forced to shower with a gay man. That’s a horrifying prospect for every mom in the country. What in the world has this nation come to?”
