Earlier this week, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni drew major criticism when he signed an anti-gay bill that punishes “aggravated homosexuality” with anywhere from 14 years to a lifetime in prison. Although Museveni claimed to have gained scientific knowledge on the existence and culture of homosexuality before making his decision, he recently made some disturbing and jaw-dropping comments about the LGBT community after signing the bill, some of which involved, of all things, gay sex and worms.
“Homosexuals are actually mercenaries. They are heterosexual people but because of money they say they are homosexuals. These are prostitutes because of money,” the evangelical Christian politician said, via the Huffington Post.
Shockingly, Museveni also claimed that gay oral sex causes, er, worms.
“You push the mouth there, you can come back with worms and they enter your stomach because that is a wrong address,” Museveni said.
Museveni also addresses President Obama’s claim that the new law would complicate U.S. relations with Uganda, which includes the $400 million the U.S. gives to Uganda every year.
“If the West does not want to work with us because of homosexuals, then we have enough space to ourselves here,” Museveni said.
Museveni claims to have gotten his information on homosexuality from Ugandan scientists, but it seems more accurate to say that he got his information from scientific brownnosers and old homophobic wives’ tales about the big gay scare.
It’s not only unfortunate that Museveni believes such ludicrous claims about homosexuality not even being a real category of sexual identity or that oral sex between two men and two women can cause worms, while straight oral sex miraculously leads only to orgasms, it’s downright ignorant, irresponsible and vile. – nicholas robinson
