It’s beyond anything you can imagine and that’s exactly what producers are hoping for. Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman, is a sci-fi thriller slated to hit theaters Easter weekend – Friday, April 18.
Renowned Artificial Intelligence researcher Dr. Will Caster (Depp) has an insatiable desire to create a machine that defies human comprehension – one that possesses infinite awareness and wisdom. It’s to the dismay of his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and mentor Joseph Tagger (Freeman), who both know that once he crosses the line, he’s unstoppable. It’s why anti-technology terrorists try to eliminate him.
“In this situation we only have one transcendent mind. Imagine if we had a hundred,” Freeman’s character ponders in the film.
Caster affirms his motivation for transcendence is simple, the preservation of human life.
“The idea that a loved one’s consciousness could be preserved was very seductive,”offers Broderick Johnson, the film’s producer.
Check out the trailer below where Director Wally Pfister describes transcendence as the “the uploading of a human brain onto a super computer”, while cast member Johnny Depp calls it “the danger to virtually be God.”
