How did you get started in the makeup business?
I spent my whole life singing but realized I hated singing in front of people [but] I still wanted to be revered at something that I was passionate about. I’d studied makeup for just as long as I did music and thought that it would be a perfect way to stay involved with music but not have to be entirely in the spotlight. I also love to empower and uplift woman. We’re Gods most magnificent creature and I live for beautiful things!
How did you get your nickname Beat Face Honey?
My best friend dropped me off at work in my first day at MAC cosmetics. I was nervous and still very much learning makeup. As I was getting out of the car he yelled, “Now you go Beat Face Honey!” I was toying with the idea of starting a YouTube channel. I needed a handle and that sounded like a good fit.
How did you get your celebrity clientele?
Jesus. and what I like to call my “Beat Face Brigade” are how I grew a celebrity clientele. No agent, manager, mentor or school placed me amongst the stars, just God and word of mouth from my amazing social media followers. After three years of making “how to” videos on YouTube, I’d racked up 5 million hits. I asked my fans to get the attention of some really big names and they went in droves on Instagram and Twitter asking that I be given a chance. God saw our efforts and thought I was worthy of what I consider a miracle.
What celebrities have you worked with?
I’ve worked with Brandy, SWV, Sommore, Teedra Moses, Nicki Minaj, Mikki Taylor, K. Michelle, and Niecy Nash to name a few.
What are your must have products?
Concealer is a must! A good Brow pencil and mineralized bowser will get you through the day too.
Do you believe in a five-minute face? If so, what is the best way to accomplish that?
I believe you get what you put in; not everybody is gonna get a full on beat down to run errands. I totally understand that. I feel however, that if you’re not gonna give your makeup at least a 15 minute try, you should maybe make it a “sunglasses” kinda day. Let your skin rest instead of doing a mediocre job. Makeup should be a fun process; a moment that you sit down and give yourself some glamour! I don’t know of anything totally glamorous that didn’t take time to achieve. At the least, make sure your brows look groomed and placed, throw some tinted moisturizer on or a light dusting of mineralized powder to even your complexion, a little mascara and a little blush.
Tell our readers about your signature “sweet beat.”
I coined the term sweet beat to differentiate between heavy and light makeup. A “beat face” is a face that is laid out; contour, highlight, crisp brows and dramatic eyes. A “sweat beat” is the kind of makeup you do with a light hand, making someone look naturally beautiful rather then heavily made up. I like both beats myself.
What advice can you give aspiring makeup artists?
Don’t give up! That’s my message to any and everyone! God has an awesome way of testing you to make you stronger and prove to yourself that you won’t fail. You’ll always come out on top if you study your craft and fight for your dream! Spend your days getting better at whatever it is you love to do. Keep your eye on the prize and do not let the devil tell you it cannot be yours! He’s a liar, ya know!
