The world came to a standstill on Saturday night when, after months of wondering and furious debate, Michael Sam, was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, making him the first openly gay football player to be signed in NFL history. And although many fans and supporters weighed in on the matter, few had more of an impact than President Obama, who congratulated Sam on his groundbreaking moment.

Shortly after Sam’s emotional signing was broadcast on national TV, President Obama released a statement via the official White House webpage, praising both Sam and the NFL for changing the world of sports.

“The President congratulates Michael Sam, the Rams and the NFL for taking an important step forward in our nation’s journey. From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove every day that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are.”

It has certainly been a long road to equality for LGBT Americans, especially when it comes to traditionally homophobic world of sports. And although there’s definitely more work to be done when comes to eradicating the homophobia, effemiphobia and sexism that plagues the sports world, there’s now evidence that Sam’s signing is just the first of many steps forward for our society and the NFL.
