“I come from a ministry, arts, entertainment and music family,” shares Rebecca Crews, wife of actor and comedian Terry Crews. The Hollywood wife and mom is excited about her forthcoming music project, “Can I Stay,” which she says is “a song about God, divine love and unconditional love.”
The former worship leader at her church, Faith Community Church in West Covina, California, in the Los Angeles area, and lifelong singer and songwriter made a declaration about her musical journey long before she entered school.
“At a very young age, I had an ability to make up a song in my head about the ants crawling in the grass, the morning sunrise or my kid sister. One day, I was sitting on my auntie’s back porch and pretended I was sailing in a boat and I wrote a song about it. At age five, I had a vision that my song about being on a boat would be on the radio. That began a lifelong journey that led me to piano lessons, groups (gospel and R&B), musical theater, gospel choirs and I performed in Dreamgirls, The Wiz and Bye, Bye Birdie growing up. It was a way to keep busy and out of trouble growing up in Gary, Indiana. I had my own gospel recording group. We sang our own music and wrote our own songs. I went to college and did the same thing,” remembers the daughter of an opera singer mother and jazz musician father.
Fast forward to today. The desire never left Crews. She reveals God called her to start focusing on acting, songwriting and arranging right before she was pregnant with her now 9-year-old son. “After serving the ministry as a music leader, one evening while driving home, all I could think about was that I never want to be separated from this feeling of worship and sense of peace. The love comes through me and radiates to others.”
The single, which releases on July 8, will be part of an album where Crews wrote every song, plays keys and co-produced. “I play several instruments and tracks. Girl producers rock!” she proclaims.
