The best friends that a citizen and the United States have today are cellphones and surveillance video. Otherwise, what happened to a man in Baltimore would have gone down as another case of a cop getting away with brutality. Kollin Truss, was arrested this past June for assaulting Baltimore police officer Vincent Cosom. The officer stated that Truss was loitering outside of a liquor store and was acting belligerent towards the officer.
The officer also claimed that Truss also pushed his girlfriend Stephanie Coleman at least three times. Cosom then claims that he attempted to break up a fight between Coleman and Truss and it was at that point that a physical confrontation occurred. According to the officer’s incident report, Truss assumed a fighting stance and the officer was in fear for his physical safety. During the altercation, Cosom claimed that he received a punch to the body from Truss. Truss was then subdued and arrested for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
However, unknown to the officer, he was on police surveillance cameras which caught the entire incident. It is evident in the video, that officer Cosom followed Truss across the street and sucker punched him in the face. After prosecutors were able to view the tape, all charges against Truss were dropped. Now Truss’s attorneys are suing officer Cosom for $35 million in damages.
