Britney Spears “My Prerogative”

Released at a time when Britney Spears was probably the most scrutinized celebrity in the world, (seems like ages ago, doesn’t it), this song is a perfect example of “good idea on paper, horrible execution.” Bobby Brown’s defiant anthem was a perfect choice for someone with growing notoriety like Brit-Brit. A perfect choice in theory. In practice, it turned a defining new jack swing hit into a percolating mess. You can’t touch this song without injecting charisma, and that’s exactly why this cover fails. Because one thing Britney never had was personality.
