Philadelphia based rapper Beanie Sigel was shot outside his Pleasantville, New Jersey, home Friday morning (Dec. 5).
Sigel, real name Dwight Grant, was shot once in the back contrary to previous reports of being shot in the stomach. His attorney Fortunato Perri, Jr., says Sigel was not the intended target of the shooting and may have been trying to break up an altercation he happened upon as he returned home from dropping his kids off at school.
Another man was injured, but not shot, in the altercation which happened about 9:20 a.m. According to authorities, that man refused medical attention and thus far has opted not to cooperate with authorities. It is believed that the man and Sigel are possibly related, though that is unconfirmed.
“The whole thing is a tragedy,” said a family member who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s just very sad and I just ask that everybody keep our family in prayer and that he pulls through.”
Sigel is doing better and is awake after being rushed into surgery according to hospital officials. Pleasantville police were hoping to interview Sigel and take a statement from the 40-year-old rapper. Hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Tornetta says the family has requested that no further information on his condition be given at this time.
Having just finished a two year federal tax evasion bid, Sigel, formerly signed to Jay Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records, was planning a concert called “Beanie Sigel: The Return” scheduled for Dec. 18 at the Theater of the Living Arts in Philadelphia.
