Although Houston died in 2012 after drowning in a bathtub with drugs in her system, this is not shown in the movie.
“A full, rich, complicated life: there’s no way to do that in a television movie,” said director Angela Bassett. “If that’s a story someone else wants to tell, then perhaps we’re a trailer to that movie. That’s not a story I was interested in telling.”
