Kevin Hart opens up about playing a gay role

Playing a gay role in Hollywood has long been a way for actors to win accolades and rave reviews, but for rising comedian Kevin Hart the idea of playing a gay role just isn’t something that he’s comfortable with.

In a recent interview with Power 105’s “The Breakfast Club,” Hart opened up about his regrets in turning down Brandon T. Jackson’s role as gay rapper Alpa Chino in 2008’s Tropic Thunder.

Hart remarked that he “appreciates and respects” the gay community, but he said, “The dude … he was doing a lot of stuff in the draft that I read. It was real flagrant.”

He then went on to say that he honestly feels that he could never play a gay character.

“I can’t [play a gay character] because I don’t think I’m really going to dive into that role 100 percent, because of the insecurities about myself trying to play that part,” he said. “What I think people are going to think while I’m trying to do this is going to stop me from playing that part the way I’m supposed to.”

Despite his opposition to playing a gay role, Hart has made it publicly known that he doesn’t intend at all to misrepresent or slight the gay community.

In early 2014, Hart explained in a Reddit AMA that he wouldn’t make gay jokes during his stand-up routines because “it’s just a sensitive topic and I respect people of all orientations.”
