'SpongeBob Movie' bumps 'American Sniper' to take over weekend box office

After an unprecedented record-breaking run, American Sniper is finally dethroned from the No. 1 spot by SpongeBob.


The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water bullied its way past Clint Eastwood’s war drama American Sniper by pulling in $56 million to Sniper’s $24.1 million. Jupiter Ascending starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis opened in the third slot with a respectable $19 million. The other newbie to crack the top 10 was Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore’s fantasy flick Seventh Son with a modest $7.1 million. Rounding out the top five was Paddington, which brought in an additional $5.4 million.
