On June 17, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, opened fire at a Bible study at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people in what has been declared a racially motivated hate crime. Yesterday, Roof was apprehended and taken into custody, but that didn’t soothe the outrage and deep sadness felt across the nation.
Following on the heels of the deaths of Freddie Gray and Kalief Browder, Wednesday’s unfathomable massacre only made it extremely difficult to identify progress or remain hopeful about the state of race relations in the United States.
As many attempt to wrap their heads around the tragic events, celebrities including Al Sharpton, Beyoncé and many more have paid tribute to the Charleston shooting victims.
