It’s no secret that Jaden Smith is a fan of quirky fashions. In fact, he’s made headlines for rocking everything from a kilt to a Batman suit to a dress. Just last year, the 16-year-old amazed us with his daring, unconventional outfits when he donned a Batman suit for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding. Last month he recycled a similar look for his high school prom. And now, he’s finally revealing the mystery behind his superhero wardrobe.

As you can imagine, Smith has always been a fan of superheros, telling GQ he would wear a Batman or Spider-Man suit styled with duck boots and “never take them off.”

So for a wedding event as fashion-focused as Kimye’s, Smith elected to rock his favorite outfit to be ready to protect wedding guests at any moment. “I wore the Batman suit to heighten my experience at the wedding and prom, which was fun, but also at the wedding I felt as though I needed to protect everyone there and needed to have the proper gear to do so,” explains Smith.

And while most formal occasions call for actual black-tie attire, Smith styles his everyday wardrobe to feel like a superhero at all times. “I’m just expressing how I feel inside, which is really no particular way because everyday it changes how I feel about the world and myself, but I like wearing super drapey things so I can feel as though I’m a superhero, but don’t have to necessarily wear superhero costumes every day.”

Although the son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s style isn’t for everyone, you have to respect the way he owns it. Smith is who he is and he’s not afraid to show it whether it’s via an unconventional hairstyle, Batman suit or an edgy kilt.
