Twitter urges social media to join their global movement (#MandelaDay) and help change our world for the better. In honor of Nelson Mandela International Day, South Africans (and people around the world) are encouraged to spend 67 minutes of their time to help someone who needs it — whether it be an encouraging word, loving embrace, you name it, nothing is off limits.

#MandelaDay was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on July 18, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year prior, calling for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said, “It is in your hands now.”

Nelson Mandela International Day is more than a celebration of Mandela’s life and legacy but a global movement to act, to change the world for the better.

But let us not forget that the need for change should extend past the South African president’s birthday. While we are happy to honor Mandela and his legacy today, #MandelaDay should serve as a reminder of the importance of looking out for a fellow citizen regardless of their gender, age and race… everyday!
