Serena Williams is not only one of the greatest athletes of our generation, but in her spare time, she’s also proven to be a bit of a fashion icon. Recently, the tennis star scored a flawless victory as the cover subject for the latest issue of New York Magazine. Inside, Serena looks poised and fierce in a series of shots that showcased her defined physique. With the spread, Serena makes a bold statement by posing in all black with little to no accessories.

Throughout the cover story, Williams candidly discussed the racism and sexism she’s encountered over her 16-year career. When asked about the indignities she has suffered while representing people of color in tennis, she was very direct about moving forward.

“I don’t dwell in the past. If I do, I’ll be swallowed up by negativity,” Williams told the magazine. If she wins the U.S. open later this month, she will have won all four grand slam events.

Although Williams made it clear that she’s not retiring from tennis anytime soon, from the looks of the photos she may be hinting at a career in fashion. Let’s check out some of the behind-the-scenes pictures from her iconic shoot.
