Janelle Monae is following in the footsteps of her mentors Big Boi and Diddy by giving young artists a chance at musical greatness. Monae recently inked a deal with Epic Records for her Wondaland imprint and decided to take her crew on the road with The Eephus tour powered by Toyota.
Mona and the Wondaland crew made their way to Atlanta on Aug. 31 with a free concert at Tabernacle. The show opened with Roman GianArthur and Monae doing a rendition of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.” The punk-influenced duo Deep Cotton then hit the stage with a high energy set that included song such “Let’s Get Caught.”
The crew’s most known member, Jidenna, hit the stage with his bold freestyle “Long Live The Chief,” before the female duo St. Beauty mellowed things out with their soulful set.
Monae returned to perform several of her biggest hits which included “Electric Lady,” “Q.U.E.E.N,” “Tightrope,” and “Yoga.”
Jidenna hit the stage and performed one of the summer’s biggest hits, “Classic Man.” To end the show, the Wondaland crew paid tribute to victims of police violence on the powerful “Hell You Talbot.”
It’s often difficult for artists to build a fan base for their new artists. But Monae’s Wondaland crew are all talented musicians who should have a wonderful future.
