Xavier University has established a proven formula to graduate and send students to medical school. According to a reports by New York Times via AAMC Data Warehouse, Xavier University has produced more Black doctors than any school in the nation. They exceed schools such as Harvard University, Duke University, and Stanford University. Howard University comes in second, while Spelman and Morehouse are seventh and eleventh, respectively,
But Xavier has found ways to give a boost to students who usually come from disadvantaged households. Many of the students who enroll at Xavier are often the first person in their family to attend college. They are also more likely to have attended high school that didn’t properly prepare them for the rigorous workload of medical school.
Understanding this harsh truth, the faculty members at Xavier meet their students at the starting point. When freshmen take chemistry and biology, essential courses needed in the medical field, the faculty members have created independent workbooks. The workbooks break down the most difficult areas within the official text books. As a result, the freshmen students are given a chance to grow and are more equipped to handle the strenuous work that they will face in medical school.
However, there is still work to be done to inspire future Black doctors. According to a report by the Association of American Medical Colleges, Black males who applied to medical school have dropped from 1,410 in 1978 to 1,337 in 2014.
