Have you heard the name of Kinna Thomas in the sweet potato pie madness this season? Well you should know her, she is the senior buyer for cakes and pies at Walmart and she had an idea to increase the quality of the company’s baked products. Just two weeks into her job, she asked suppliers to create a pie based on her family recipe. She started testing out her pies with her co-workers and soon found herself headed for fame.
She brought her idea to Kerry Robinson, vice president for bakery and deli at Walmart and the company picked up and ran with the initiative. Within 24 hours, she was in contact with Patti LaBelle to work on a finished product. According to Thomas, the Labelle touch included adding cinnamon, a thicker crust, and making sure the texture was different than pumpkin pie. The rest is now history as the company can’t keep the product on the shelves because of demand.
