Will Smith has always been open and honest about his marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith and fans of the couple have always looked to their relationship as the blueprint for how to make Black love sustainable. However, although Will and Jada have been married for 20 years, he recently shared that married life isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. In fact, he says that being married to Jada is “difficult.”
During a recent interview with “Entertainment Tonight” at the premiere of his new film, Concussion, Smith spoke about making his marriage a priority and revealed it’s not been easy staying married to Jada.
“We’ve been married 20 years and we’ve been asking ourselves [what’s the secret to marriage] and really at the end of the day it’s just not quitting,” Smith said. “You can’t expect it to be easy, it’s like our marriage was the most difficult, grueling, excruciating thing that we have ever taken on in our lives. And you know we’re just not quitters.”
Smith was then asked to share what the secret of a successful marriage is.
“If there is a secret I would say is that we never went into working [on] our relationship,” he explained. “We only ever worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously.”
Once again, you’ve got to hand it to Smith for being so candid about his marriage and we must admit that was a simple yet pretty powerful piece of advice on love.
