Amandla Stenberg is headed to New York University — and it is well-deserved. Not only is the Hunger Games actress a rising activist, but she is a smart, silver-tongued force to be reckoned with. Take for instance her latest project, “Blue Girls Burn Fast,” a short she wrote, directed, produced, and edited for her application to NYU’s prestigious film school.
“So excited to officially share Blue Girls Burn Fast with you. @yaoimandel stars as Andy, and @whoooleeaah stars as Lea. It’s a short I wrote, directed, shot, and edited. It was also my NYU application film. I made it with my best friends (@bailey_wait assisted directed, @novemberskyys was the boom operator) with a DSLR camera and lots of love. It’s very personal to my heart. I hope you enjoy!” she wrote via Instagram, alongside a teaser of the film.
Starring Leeza Lester (as Andy) and Julia Rocha (as Lea), the 20-minute-long clip follows a foster teen, Andy, who must navigate both family, life, and school. She is quickly introduced to Lea, a neighbor who one night sneaks into her room through a window, and things are never the same. The film is poignant, touching, a total must-watch. It will have you instantly rooting for protagonist Andy, and leave you wanting more.
According to Stenberg, the visual was a shared effort, as friends Bailey Wait and November Rivera also helped out during the filming process, reports Teen Vogue. From the looks of things, it totally paid off, as the multi-talented star will be enrolling in the fall. The film is a wonderful glimpse at the 17-year-old’s talent as a filmmaker and one of the many reasons we hope to see more of her work in the near future.
