The first trailer for Southside With You is finally here. In the classic boy-meets-girl romance, writer-director Richard Tanne gives us a glimpse of where it all began for Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson — you know, the young couple who went on to become the U.S. commander in chief and the first lady.

While the rom-com premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, executive producer John Legend, recently shared the trailer, giving fans an intimate look at the Obamas’ first-ever date on a warm summer day in 1989.

As previously reported, “The Haves and the Have Nots” star Tika Sumpter has signed on to play Michelle Obama; while Parker Sawyers, best known for his work on Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Survivor (2015) and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit stars as the future president, who takes a summer job at a Chicago law firm in 1989. There, he meets his boss, a young attorney named Michelle Robinson, who after some persistent wooing from Barack, agrees to spend the day with him on Chicago’s South Side.

While strolling through the Windy City — discussing their views on politics, participating in a little community service, viewing an art exhibit, and finally, catching a showing of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing — the pair findd they have a connection — a love connection. After nightfall, they shared both an ice cream cone and a kiss. That’s the gist of the film, reports Deadline.

Although the Obamas have yet to respond to the film itself, not long ago, Tanne told Yahoo, “I’ve heard from pretty reliable second-hand sources that they are aware of the movie, that they are curious to see it, and also, I think, rightfully baffled that it exists.”

Southside With You hits theaters on Aug. 19. In the meantime, check out the trailer above. Will you be watching? Sound off in the comment section below.
