R&B diva Syleena Johnson is very close to her mother Brenda. So close in fact that she and her sister fully supported Brenda when she agreed to star on the reality show “Celebrity Mamas of Atlanta.” Prior to being known as celebrity mama, Brenda Johnson was one of the first Black police commissioners in the 1980s. Living the life of a former politician and mom for the past twenty plus years, Mama Brenda welcomed the opportunity to retire in Atlanta near her daughters Syleena and Syleecia.
Mama Brenda is all about her family. When Syleena asked her to come to Atlanta to help Syleena with her children, Mama Brenda didn’t think twice about stepping right in and helping out while Syleena pursued her career as an R& B artist. Mama Brenda even recruited her sister to move to Atlanta, right down the street from her in the same subdivision.
The politician in Mama Brenda constantly reminds citizens of their responsibility to vote and scrutinize the people elected into office. She encourages people to vote at the local level. “We have to tell those in office what changes we are wanting to see and when we don’t see it happening, don’t be afraid to ask what happened,” says Mama Brenda.
After the interview, I walked away thinking about how Mama Brenda had no choice but to be tough on her three daughters because it just seemed to be the way she was built. I could only imagine how tough she had to be as a black female police commissioner in any city. However, I got the feeling the tough mama treatment was only part of her style raising her girls with much motherly love. Check out Mama Brenda’s video and see for yourself.
