Chicago continues to suffer from violence as the year comes to an end. During the Christmas weekend, joy turned to tragedy after 12 people were killed and 27 were shot.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the deadly Christmas weekend began on Dec. 23 when two young men, 20 and 21, were killed. At midnight on Christmas Eve, a 27-year old was shot and killed.

On Christmas morning, a 21-year-old was found in a backyard with a gunshot wound to the head. A family was enjoying Christmas on their porch when a gunman ran from an alley and began firing. Two brothers, 18 and 21, were killed during the incident which wounded three others. No arrests have been made in the shooting.

Chicago continues to deal with overwhelming violence. Over 750 people have been killed thus far in 2016. The high death toll has caused  2016 to be the deadliest year in Chicago in over 20 years.

During an event to combat Chicago violence in June, Lucia McBath, the mother of murdered teen Jordan Davis, spoke about the healing that is needed.

“It’s important for me to come back to where I was raised and to help champion gun violence prevention. Gun violence victims often are nameless and people outside of their communities don’t know who they are. I’m here to rally the troops,” McBath said.

More will be needed to stop the increase in violence in 2017.
