“Star Trek: Discovery” made history by announcing the iconic show’s first-ever Black female lead.

Earlier this week, actress Sonequa Martin-Green, 32, revealed that she’s the new face of the beloved sci-fi series, slated to air this fall.

“Eeeeeeeeeeek! On news stands now. 🖖🏽❤️ #startrekdiscovery #isthisreallife #Godyoutellme #thankful #excitedtosharethisjourneywithyouall,” she wrote via Instagram, alongside an image featuring her character reveal on the cover of Entertainment Weekly magazine.

In the series, which is set in the “the prime universe,” about 10 years before the original William Shatner-helmed series, Martin-Green, will take on the role of Michael Burnham, Spock’s adopted sister, Digital Spy reports.

She’s a household name
Before nabbing a historic role on “Star Trek: Discovery,” the 32-year-old actress starred on AMC’s long-running “The Walking Dead.” According to the star, it was her time on the acclaimed horror drama that prepared her for handling the limelight. “I’ve been calling my time on Walking Dead my sort of post-graduate degree,” she recently told “ET.” “I learned so much about being on a show that has such a massive reach.”

She’s an ambassador for Stand Up To Cancer
“Cancer runs rampant in my family,” Martin-Green told WebMD of why she got involved with the effort. “My mother is a three-time survivor: first colon cancer, then breast, and then cancer in her stomach. She is a warrior. One of my sisters recently won her battle with breast cancer. So many of my aunts and uncles and my grandparents on both sides have struggled with it.”

She’s a health nut
“I do try to eat lean meats and veggies most of the time, and organic as much as possible. I stay away from dairy, gluten, and sugar as much as possible. I’m a work in progress,” she once told WebMD. Adding with a laugh that she can’t live without this cheat meal, “I can’t get burgers and fries out of my mind! At this point, I eat them maybe three times a month.”

She honored to take on her new role
“The honor is mine. The pleasure is mine. I feel that we are all running over — our cups are running over with gratitude and excitement,” Martin-Green said during the 2017 TCA Summer Press Tour. “We’re bursting at the seams from the weight of it and the breadth of it. We just—we couldn’t be more thrilled to share this journey with you because we understand its significance. We know we’re telling a story we believe in. Everybody is so passionate. … This is an epically grand, yet microscopically tuned, deeply emotional story. We don’t take it for granted. We don’t take it lightly. I certainly don’t. I feel like — it’s a dream to be able to be a part of history. It’s a dream. So, thank you.”

“Star Trek: Discovery” also stars James Frain, Jason Isaacs, Mary Chieffo and more. It’s slated to premiere on Sunday, Sept. 24, on CBS. Will you be watching? Sound off in the comment section below.
