We’re already dealing with this huge wealth gap that is not going to be overcome by digging our way out. There’s got to be sweeping legislative and policy changes. We’ve got to get people in the right seats, making the decisions that care about people that look like us. And so we’re fighting on all fronts right now. We have got to keep our people safe. We’ve got to keep people off the streets. We’ve got to help our businesses get back in play. We have got to wake our folks up to the power and importance of our home. It’s all on the line.
What has the Urban League done to economically help the community?
We’re now a Financial Empowerment Center. It’s an economic mobility model that we’ve adopted, that was developed by a nonprofit organization called LISC. And it’s been in effect for 15 plus years. So it’s an evidence-based model. It works. We can meet people where they are, and support them to go up the economic ladder beyond livable wages.
