What does the organization’s annual fund support?
The Detroit Urban League has a staff of approximately 50 employees and an annual budget of over $5 million. The Detroit Urban League serves more than 14,000 each month, as its mission is to enable African Americans and other people of color to cultivate and exercise their fullest potential on par with all others. We have an emergency food fund that we use to serve those in need on an immediate basis. We have auditors and accountants that make sure we stay up to date and in line on our fund allocation.
How would you encourage youth to become community leaders?
I would encourage young people to be a mentor to young boys and girls. When building your career, do something. Don’t just be somebody who stands around and is eloquent about what’s wrong and what somebody ought to do. Do it.
