What can young people do to move themselves forward?
What we need for young people to do is get engaged. They could go to a community bank or to a community development financial institution somewhere where they can start to become knowledgeable about homeownership, because it is the way to wealth. I would also say that as we talk about the the legislation that has been working its way through Congress, to look at the opportunities that have been created for people of color to live better.
There is no place in this country where somebody should not be able to turn on a tap and drink water. So, we’re going to make sure that there’s no lead in these pipes. There is no place in this country where a young person shouldn’t be able to go to school virtually from home. We’re going to deal with the broadband issues. There is no place in this country where you should have to sleep on the street because you can’t afford the rising cost of housing. These are things that we have taken care of in these bills. I’m really happy about the fact that the president and the administration have focused and given me the opportunity to do what I know is right.
What do you say to those who believe that President Biden has abandoned us already?
It’s just not true. When you look at the bill that was passed, and the human infrastructure bill that we’re getting ready to pass, I think that they will see that. When you start to talk about the resources committed to education, $150 billion allocated to housing, money allocated to child care and elder care, you see that it’s working. I could go on and on. Now, we may not be able to do everything, but we will do more because we care. We have the ability. We have an opportunity, a unique, once in a generation opportunity to make change for our people, and we’re going to do it.
