On Monday, Dec. 13, 2021, the nominations were revealed for the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards, with the help of rapper and songwriter Snoop Dogg.
The list of nominees include Will Smith in King Richard for Best Picture and Best Actor, Anthony Anderson in “Black-ish”for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, and West Side Story for Best Motion Picture.
There was some backlash from last year’s nominations, as it was noted that some Black-led films were snubbed, such as Judas and the Black Messiah, which went on to be a nominee as Best Picture for the Oscars.
Regina King and Kerry Washington were among the people who addressed the lack of diversity within the group, and NBC decided not to participate in the event this year due to those issues.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced earlier this year that they would have at least 13 black members by the next ceremony. Since then, the HFPA has added 21 new members, and partnered with the NAACP to fight for inclusion across the industry.
Winners for the ceremony will be announced on Jan. 9, 2022.
