Boisterous rapper Boosie Badazz announced in a Southern California federal court that he and his fiancée are planning to get married very soon.
However, the U.S. Department of Justice argued against Boosie having contact with his wife-to-be Rajel Nelson while he legally wades his way through his felony gun possession charge.
The San Diego Police Department stated in court documents that they were monitoring a local gang member on Instagram Live when they noticed Boosie was seen with the butt of a gun inside his waistband. Not long after, Boosie was caught during a traffic stop in San Diego with two loaded handguns in his vehicle. He was subsequently charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Boosie, born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as Torrance Hatch Jr., requested to see his girlfriend while appearing in court over the phone in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California on Jan. 12. He and his attorneys requested that the terms of his release be amended or altered to allow him to see his longtime girlfriend, whom he has been apart from since June 2023.
“We vehemently oppose that,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Wheat, according to Courthouse News Service, citing “security concerns.”
Because the federal prosecutor’s request lacked specificity, U.S. District Judge Cathy Ann Bencivengo voiced concerns about denying Boosie the ability to contact his girlfriend.
“This seems like a fairly serious curtailment of his rights,” Bencivengo told prosecutor Wheat.
“It’s vague unless we have some details to fill the gaps,” Boosie’s attorney Damon Alimouri said.
The publication stated that Wheat requested a sidebar with the judge to explain its position. Following a lengthy discussion while the court played white noise to prevent anyone from hearing it, the judge decided to deny Boosie a visit to his fiancée for another 60 days.
Once the 60 days have lapsed, if federal prosecutors do not present other objections, then the stay-away order for Boosie ends, and his request to see his girlfriend will be granted.
Later in the court proceedings, Boosie asked the judge if his court case would interrupt his plans to marry Nelson.
“Boosie, I suggest that you remain silent and not say anything on the record,” Alimouri reportedly responded.
