Shawn Gauthney’s journey through education, leadership, and legacy building

From historic campus grounds to the halls of innovation, how a marketing leader is redefining excellence at America’s first HBCU

I am Shawn Gauthney, the driving force behind innovative marketing and communications strategies at Cheyney University. With over two decades under my belt, I’ve not just participated in the field—I’ve redefined it. My signature achievements include the trailblazing launch of Hussian College’s virtual Philadelphia office, being the mastermind behind Cheyney University’s inaugural gala, and being the architect of the partnership between Graduate Philadelphia and North10 Impact Center. My domain spans community engagement, education operations, marketing, communications, enrollment management, and executive leadership.

Educationally, I’ve armed myself with a B.A. in Organizational Leadership from Ashford University, fortified by leadership strategies from the University of Pennsylvania and public relations tactics from Cornell University. These aren’t just credentials; they’re my arsenal in my mission to forge a path for the generations that follow. My motivation is unwavering because I want to leave a lasting legacy of innovation and progress.

Outside the confines of my professional life, I am a storyteller at heart, weaving narratives through short stories and articles. My commitment to societal upliftment is evident in my leadership roles across various non-profit boards, including the helm at YESPhilly, strategic advisories at Youth Build Charter School, and pivotal governance at the Cheyney University Foundation Board. My service is my testament to the belief that giving back is not just an act of kindness but a duty.

My life philosophy? True leaders are born in the crucible of challenge. I’ve embraced adversity, letting it fuel my journey and transform me into a testament of resilience and strength. This was my reality when I returned to school as a single father, a journey that not only tested but also solidified my resolve.

The horizon holds no bounds for me. With the Executive MBA at Howard University on the docket, a podcast in the pipeline, and a consulting firm on the horizon, I am on an unstoppable trajectory toward excellence. My personal life is no less dynamic, with aspirations to deepen familial ties, especially as I step into the grand role of a grandfather.

While I aspire to bring my expertise and vision to the School Board for the Philadelphia School District, this ambition is a reflection of my commitment to transformative leadership and societal contribution. My narrative is presented with a blend of gravity and wit, mirroring the duality of my approach to both life and leadership. Leadership, to me, is more than a skill; it’s a muscle, endlessly capable of growth and fortification.

I take pride in my thought leadership, contributing to the discourse on dreaming boldly and the enduring legacy of HBCUs. I am eager to influence, inspire, and innovate as I stand on the verge of new beginnings. Alongside my wife Latosha, my son Kameron, a college junior named Destiny at the University of Pittsburgh, and my oldest daughter, who is embarking on motherhood, my journey is a testament to leadership, service, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. My narrative is not just a story; it’s a clarion call to action, a beacon of inspiration for those who dare to dream and do.
