Colman Domingo feels “comfortable” in Valentino because he and Alessandro Michele are “kindred spirits”.
The ‘Sing Sing’ star donned a black tuxedo designed by the label’s creative director for the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday (05.01.25) and his stylists Micah McDonald and Wayman Bannerman adore the “celebratory” tone the designer offers their famous client’s looks. The custom creation took over 100 hours to complete, showcasing Valentino’s renowned craftsmanship.
“There is definitely a comfort level there,” Wayman told The Hollywood Reporter. “There is a celebratory element that the brand brings to menswear fashion, and it’s always a joyous moment when we connect with Alessandro and a custom creation. So many influences and voices can be expressed through fashion, and Alessandro is not afraid to find the meeting point for those multiple elements.” This collaboration reflects a growing trend of personalized designer-actor relationships in Hollywood.
“Alessandro and Colman definitely became kindred spirits and there’s another level of pride in that, when you can wear clothing created by someone you believe in on a human level,” Micah added. The relationship between designer and actor has evolved over several award seasons, resulting in multiple memorable red carpet moments.
The suit was accessorized with a “classic and romantic” Valentino evening shoe, a diamond-embellished watch by Omega, and diamond jewelry by Boucheron. The accessories were carefully curated to complement the tuxedo’s sophisticated silhouette while adding subtle elements of luxury.
“The jewelry is so stunning, statement rings along with some really interesting studs. The look is unique, which also makes it classic Colman,” Wayman said. The Boucheron pieces featured rare diamonds totaling over 10 carats.
But of particular note when it came to the 55-year-old actor’s red carpet look at the ceremony was his silk tie. The handcrafted silk piece underwent special treatment to achieve its distinctive sheen.
“I have to brag on Wayman for a moment,” Micah said. “I have never met anyone who ties a better bow than Wayman, and with a brand like Valentino, that’s a talent. I was trying to tie it myself tonight [during a fitting], and all of a sudden I noticed the room had gotten quiet. Then Wayman walked in and immediately took over. He has an ability to take that tie and elevate it to another level.” The perfect bow tie has become a signature element of Domingo’s formal wear appearances.
The duo adore working with Colman, whose approach to fashion has garnered increasing attention in the industry. Their collaborative process has become a model for stylist-client relationships in Hollywood.
“Our fittings are always super fun, because he’s such a free spirit and adores fashion,” Wayman said. “We try a lot of things in fittings — different colors and silhouettes, mixing prints and patterns together, we play with shapes — and Colman’s always all for it, and we never take very long, because we move through things organically. We’re all just so in sync.” The team typically explores dozens of options before settling on the final look.
This appearance at the Golden Globes continues Domingo’s streak of memorable red carpet moments, cementing his position as one of Hollywood’s most stylish actors. Fashion critics have particularly noted his ability to balance classic elegance with contemporary trends.
The collaboration between Domingo and Valentino represents a growing trend in men’s fashion, where traditional boundaries are being pushed while maintaining sophistication. Industry experts predict this partnership will influence future red carpet fashion choices for male celebrities.
This particular ensemble also showcases the evolution of men’s formal wear, incorporating subtle details that elevate classic pieces. The attention to craftsmanship and personalization demonstrates the changing landscape of celebrity fashion, where individual style and designer vision merge seamlessly.
