There’s an understated beauty in the ability to give to those less fortunate. It’s a fact that has never been lost on rap superstar Ludacris. As the Atlanta-bred rapper sat down for an exclusive interview for “The Ask,” he shared thoughtful insight into his love for charity, as well as his desire to have his fellow man show a bit more compassion to one another.
When did you begin giving back to the community and how did it make you feel?
I used to work at a radio station where they required us to do a certain amount of community service every week. And as hard as it is for me to say this, I started off really ignorant like,’ man I’m not trying to do that; I don’t want to do that. I want to get out in these streets and play around.’
But I was glad I was forced to do it because as soon as I started touching kids lives and being able to have people look up to me, I instantly was like I absolutely love doing this.
What is your advice to others that want to give back but can’t afford to do so monetarily?
It’s not always about money. Sometimes it’s about dedicating your time and energy. We can all give back in some way shape, form or fashion. Just do it.
What advice do you have for an individual that is struggling with deciding on a foundation?
I would say find something that is dear to your heart or maybe something your family members have gone through. It could be a disease; It could be anything that’s personal to an individual as long as they want to dedicate their time and energy to it.
What message would you like to give young people in the community?
I want them to know that it’s bigger than the individual. Respect their elders and always be intelligent because violence begets violence.
If you could ask the African-American community to do something to empower the community what would it be?
To uplift each other in our community as opposed to being so jealous and trying to down one another. Try to plant the seeds of supporting each other more, whether it’s black businesses or continuing just to uplift each other in so many different ways.
