In the past two years, more than two-dozen historically black colleges have lost presidents with many citing financial issues as the chief concern. Because of the rising tuition costs at many HBCUs, presidents are having to work extra hard to find ways to bring in donations for the schools to reverse low enrollment rates. According to the Savannah Morning News, “Presidents of other colleges and universities — not just historically black institutions — have complained in recent years of the demands that fundraising places on their time, and there has been a flurry of turnover at some of the nation’s top schools. Many institutions have come to regard the ability to raise money as an important qualification for president.” With this being said, because HBCUs are smaller than most public institutions, black college presidents are facing greater pressure. So, let’s celebrate the presidents who are still currently leading HBCU colleges today.
