It’s been a rough few months for Bobby Brown. Since the death of his famous ex-wife, Whitney Houston, in February, many have accused him of sending Houston down the dark path of self-destruction that ultimately claimed her life. But in a new interview on NBC’s “Today,” Brown claims that he’s not the cause of Houston’s death.
“It makes me feel terrible,” Brown said of being blamed for Houston’s death. “But I know differently.”
Brown does, however, admit to understanding why people looked at his relationship with Houston as volatile and that drugs were partially to blame for the very public demise of their 14-year marriage.
“I think if anyone ever knew us, if anybody ever spent time around us instead of time lookin’ through the bubble, they would know how we felt about each other. They would know how happy we were together,” Brown.
The singer added that his reality show, “Being Bobby Brown,” helped him understand just how destructive their “bubble” had become.
“And the reality show gave us a wake-up, because we saw each other — we looked at the bubble and saw ourselves,” Brown explained. “We was able to see what other people were saying about us, you know? We was able to see that our drug use had affected our relationship, had affected the love that we felt for each other.”
Though drugs played a heavy part in the later years of their relationship, Brown insists that he wasn’t the one that introduced Houston to drugs.
“I didn’t get high before I met Whitney … I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs at all … I’m not the reason she’s gone,” Bobby explained.
Brown revealed that he saw Houston and their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, just a week before Houston’s death on Feb. 11, and recalled that the singer “looked really well” and had a glow.
Brown claims that he was unaware that Houston was still dealing with a drug addiction and was shocked to learn just a week later that she died.
“I was hurt. I was hurt … Because, you know, me being off of narcotics for the last seven years – I felt that she was, you know, I didn’t know she was struggling with it still. But at the same time, you know – listen, it’s a hard fight,” Brown told Lauer. “It’s a hard fight to, you know, maintain sobriety that way.”
However, Brown doesn’t blame Houston’s addiction for her death, but rather says it was a tragic fluke.
“From what I feel and you know, how I saw her, the last time I saw her, it had to be that particular day. You know, it had to be that one, because that’s all it takes … One hit, you know, and you know, it could definitely take your life away from you. And, unfortunately, that was it,” said Brown.
Despite all of the hardships and tragedies Brown and Houston experienced, both in life and, sadly, through death, Brown says that he has always love his beloved ex-wife.
“I can honestly say that I love that woman with … everything that I am,” Brown said. “And I believe she loved me the same way. We wouldn’t have been able to make the most beautiful girl in the world without love. And that’s the truth.”
