Hennessy cognac chose The Roots to serve as the curators of their 2010 Artistry concert series. On Sept. 25, the four city tour made a stop at the Ice Palace in Miami.
The Roots and Q-Tip of a Tribe Called Quest hit the stage shortly after 11:00 p.m. and covered the classic N.W.A hit “Straight Outta Compton.”
Questlove and The Roots band provided a rock-like feel as Black Thought and Q-Tip traded verses. The emcees also covered Slick Rick’s “Mona Lisa,” and EPMD’s “So What Cha Sayin.'”
After the old school hip-hop covers, Q-Tip performed several songs from his days with Tribe Called Quest. Fan favorites included “Bonita Applebum” and “Electric Relaxation.”
The Roots took command of the stage and performed their hit singles “The Next Movement,” “Star,” and “What You Want.” Eve joined The Roots for “You Got Me.” The former Ruff Ryder rapper brought energy to the two hour show with her hits “What Y’all Want,” “Who’s That Girl?” and “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.”
But the biggest surprise of the night was an appearance by the King of R & B, Bobby Brown. Although Brown appeared out of shape and a bit sluggish, his voice was strong as the crowd sung the words to “My Prerogative,” “Roni,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”
For all fans who were too young to know, outside of The Roots, these groups had the late 80s and 90s on lock…google ’em.
The Hennessy Artistry concert series will travel to Detroit and conclude in New York. –amir shaw
