On a night that featured the biggest acts in music, Janelle Monae stood out as one of the industry’s brightest stars. The eclectic songbird closed the 2013 BET Awards with a riveting performance of her latest single “Queen.” Backed by a live band and a set that resembled a museum, Monae wore her symbolic black and white “uniform.”
From the onset, she exhibited high energy. Monae’s soul sister, Erykah Badu, hit the stage sporting a flowing Afro and walking a white poodle.
Monae closed her set with an inspirational rhyme, “Mixing masterminds like your name Bernie Grundman, Well I’m gonna keep leading like a young Harriet Tubman, You can take my wings but I’m still goin’ fly…And while you’re selling dope, we’re gonna keep selling hope, We rising up now, you gotta deal you gotta cope, Will you be electric sheep? Electric ladies, will you sleep? Or will you preach?”
